CSI Miami must investigate some interesting homicides that involve possible cannibalism, stabbings, and brutal beatings. We learn eventually that the two homicides are related, and center around the Russian Mafia in Miami.
The mob is always a great antagonist for police shows, but after the popularization of the Italian Mafia in great movies (Goodfellas, Casino, and Gotti) and TV shows (Sopranos), the Italian mob has lost it’s dangerous edge. Enter the Russian Mafia — brutal, deadly, and apparently none of the “morals” associated with the Italian mob.
The episode opens like they normally do. The first dead body discovered by witnesses, the police arriving, and finally Horatio Caine’s cheesey one-liner, followed by putting on his glasses and a cut-away to the opening credits.
This episode the Horatio’s “Perfect place for a murder” was weak. Let’s hope for something funnier next time.
Then they pull one of those CSI tricks used to progress the plot, but goes against all the odds. In this case not only do we discover Eric Delko is half-Russian (if this was ever disclosed before I don’t recall), but he also knows how to decipher Russian mob tattoos.
Finally Horatio shows more balls than brains telling the Russian mob boss he was going to go after him.
Moving on to the forensic aspects of the show.
1) At one point DNA results are done before latent prints are done. Please remember DNA takes time to prepare samples for amplification, and hours to actually amplify, and then it takes time to run on the analyzer.
Latent prints in contrast, take some time to develop and photograph. Then the image has to be entered into AFIS (Automated Fingerprint Identification System), and some time for a candidate list to come back for eventual physical comparison analysis.
In short, it’s possible for a RUSH latent print analysis to be done same day, but DNA is going to take overnight at least.
