They did some really interesting time lapse photography effects to show how a body decomposes. While pretty gory, it was very interesting to see.

But onto the forensic aspects of the show:

1) Swabbing an old fingerprint smudge from a metal surface and running it in a GC (/MS?) allowed the team to discover that the person who touched the surface smoked Cuban cigars. OK, MAYBE they could tell there was tobacco residue, but it’s these magical CSI TV show databases that let them know it was from a cigar, and not only that, but a CUBAN cigar.

2) They were able to match toolmarks in the victims bones back to the tool used to kill them. Well, actually that’s fine. I just wanted to point that fact out.

But the best part of the episode was Caine getting to arrest the dirty judge that had killed someone before, and was working with the land developer to low-ball the value of people’s houses that were being declared eminent domain. Governments that abuse eminent domain powers are an example of the true evil government can visit on people. And a dirty judge is the weakest link in our government’s system of checks and balances, be it caving into special interests or judicial activism.
