My wife suggested I add blog entries regarding the parts of the popular television drama (CSI) that make me say “bull” while we watch it. She finds it interesting to hear what is far fetched in my opinion.
Granted these are my opinions only, and I am more sensitive to incidents that relate to my main areas of expertise (drugs, alcohol, arson, and firearms). I’m sure other people would disagree, and other forensic scientists would possibly object to other incidents that I don’t.
#1 When the medical examiner removes the fired damaged projectile from the victim in the café shooting, the firearm examiner is able to identify it as a .243 projectile visually. I may know some serious hunters that might be able to make that call, but I don’t know any firearm examiners that could call that visually.
#2 When the fired casing from the café shooting was recovered, there was a usable latent print left by the first victim in the show who knows how many months earlier. In my experience getting a usable latent print off a fired casing is incredibly rare, let alone one that was put on the cartridge sometime before firing.
