Why anyone would use ancient bullets when in America you can get any bullets over the counter- maybe his supplier mixed some crap bullets in. They could have done near the same explosion if the rather incompetent lab tech (leaving bullets rolling on the table not in box or bag) had spilled the whole ethanol bottle and bullet sparks by hitting the side of the table.
