The Detroit Crime Lab might be re-opening. If it does, it will be under the Michigan State Police, not Detroit PD.
If city officials open a crime lab in a new police headquarters, the facility won’t be staffed by Detroit police.
Detroit police tell the Detroit Free Press for a story Tuesday that Michigan State Police will operate the lab.
State police have been processing evidence for Detroit since the city’s crime lab closed in 2008 after authorities found dozens of cases with misjudged evidence.
Seven state police crime labs have been playing catch up with 20,000 additional cases that once had been processed by Detroit. That’s on top of the 110,000 cases the state police handled each year.
The city has signed a purchase agreement to buy the now-closed MGM Grand temporary casino for $6.32 million. A state-of-the-art crime lab would be added to the new headquarters.
