Legal assistant accused of plotting gang hit

It’s a bit scary to think that some trusted with work­ing to help pro­tect indi­vid­u­als’ rights could them­selves be crim­i­nals. It’s worse to think they could be orches­trat­ing attempts to have some­one murdered.

Authorities say a legal assis­tant at the Maricopa County pub­lic defender’s office has been indicted after allegedly try­ing to arrange an assas­si­na­tion hit on a man who fell out of favor with his street gang.

Margaret Alvarado of Phoenix was charged with a count each of con­spir­acy to com­mit first-degree mur­der, solic­i­ta­tion of first-degree mur­der, telecom­mu­ni­ca­tion fraud and two counts of assist­ing a crim­i­nal street gang.
