Supreme Court Rules in Favor of Individual Gun Rights

Today the US Supreme Court ruled as expected in MacDonald v Chicago. In a 5–4 ruling, they reiterated their previous ruling (Heller v District of Columbia) that the Second Amendment guarantees individuals’ rights “to keep and bear arms.” They also stated, clearly, that the ruling does not prevent state and local governments from regulating those rights.

Chicago Mayor Richard Daley expected the ruling, and will be working with city council to develop some likely draconian gun laws.

Handgun Control Inc (The Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence) lamented that Chicago and DC were the last two outright handgun bans.

New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg was happy to hear that the Supreme Court acknowledged local governments rights to regulate gun ownership. It is likely the oppressive gun laws in New York City will be a blue-print for other anti-gun cities.

NRA vice-president Wayne LaPierre said the NRA “will continue to work at every level to insure that defiant city councils and cynical politicians do not transform this constitutional victory into a practical defeat through Byzantine regulations and restrictions.”
