With nation­wide state bud­get crises, it’s no won­der pub­lic crime lab back­logs are grow­ing. Open vacan­cies are the worst thing for back­logs, as it is almost impos­si­ble to grab a new col­lege stu­dent off the street and throw them into case work quickly.

RI Crime Lab Firearms Evidence Facing 4 Year Backlog

While many dis­ci­plines in foren­sics can be learned in col­lege, or quickly on the job, firearms analy­sis is one that typ­i­cally can not. Most uni­ver­sity admin­is­tra­tions have an inher­ent hatred towards firearms, pre­clud­ing foren­sic firearms exam­i­na­tion from being a topic that can be stud­ied from a prac­ti­cal stand point.

So appar­ently another law enforce­ment agency is about to open it’s own crime lab — so much for peo­ple lis­ten­ing to the NAS report, and it’s rec­om­men­da­tion for get­ting crime labs out of the hands of law enforce­ment and pros­e­cu­tors to reduce insti­tu­tional bias.
